The Fight Against Cancer Causes Cancer

There hasn’t been a lot of cancer in the lives of people I know, which I am eternally grateful for – there’s been some, just not a lot.

But this, this kinda pisses me off.

YOLO #1

You only live once!!

So, I’m defs not going to be documenting the YOLO Project everyyyy day, but I’ll be updating about it every once in awhile.  Keep your eyeballs peeled for fresh reports, yo!

Today’s YOLO: Use a tilt-shift lens.

Allegra and I decided to bust out the Edge 80 lens that Lensbaby offered her a few weeks ago.  It was a lot of fun and a big challenge for both of us!

Here are a few of the results!

The YOLO Project.

Upon examining my life as of late, I decided it was extremely boring. Allegra agreed.  We decided it was time for a change and that change came in the form of a ridiculous acronym.

The YOLO (You Only Live Once) Project:  Try one new thing every day, all summer, no exceptions.

Go somewhere you’ve never been.

Eat something you’ve never eaten.

Do something you’ve never done.

ETC.

The point is: mix it up, try new things, complete your bucket list, find new passions, create new stories.

It would be lovely to have some fellow adventurers.  Any takers?

Too Old For This Shi…. aka Danny Glover Medley

A somewhat awkward mashup of movie clips centering around this go-to-phrase for aging characters, something I’ve been saying a little too often as of late.

Clearly, though, I am not too old because I didn’t recognize even half of those movies.  I R LAME.

Brit Marling

As of late, I’ve been obsessed intrigued with Brit Marling.  Not in a creepy way, just in an “I like your work” kinda way.  There’s something about her that’s raw and fresh, and mysteriously fascinating.
My introduction to her was in the form of Another Earth which was, to me, magically delicious. She co-stared alongside William Mapother, LOST’s creepster extraordinaire Ethan. Shot on a shoestring budget of $200,000, Another Earth was filmed from illegally parked cars and by trespassing in jails. That’s the kind of movie I want to watch. Here’s a trailer if you missed it.

Soon to be released, Brit goes villain (it seems…) in The Sound of My Voice, a news-journalist-futuristic-cult-infiltration film which scares the bejeezus outta me within the first 12 minutes (which you should watch).  Here’s da trailer, creep yourself out.

It seems like Brit’s career is on the teetering edge of taking off, I’m just hoping she doesn’t compromise her freshness for “success.”  She had a one-episode cameo on Community as Page, a cool hipstery character opposite Gillian Jacobs.

Her film que pairs her with some pretty big names.  Arbitrage sees her join forces with Susan Sarandon and Richard Gere (both of whom I despise) as the pair’s (I’m assuming) daughter.  Lie To Me’s Tim Roth (WHOM I LOVE) is also attached.  Plot:

A troubled hedge fund magnate is forced to turn to an unlikely person for help after a crucial mistake involving a sale in his trading empire.

Sounds kinda boring, but I’d see it because of Mr. Roth and Ms. Marling.

Also on her agenda, The Company You Keep,

The story centers on widower Jim Grant, a former Weather Underground militant, wanted for a bank robbery and murder, who hid from the FBI for over thirty years, eventually becoming an Albany attorney. He becomes a fugitive when his identity is exposed. He must find the one person who can clear his name while protecting his young daughter.

which is based on Neil Gordon’s novel of the same name, posts Ms. Marling in a slew with Robert Redford, Shia LaBeouf (ew), Sam Elliott, Stanley Tucci (a personal fav), Brendan Gleeson, Terrence Howard, Chris Cooper, and Susan Sarandon (again).  It’s actually kind of intimidating to write so many giant names into one sentence.  So often though, with so many characters by such big names, it just stretches the plot and screen time too thin, which = lame movie.  *coughNewYear’sEve/Valentine’sDaycough*  But in other cases it can work, as I would argue Love Actually does.  Or a few hopefuls such as Spielberg’s upcoming Lincoln or Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus.  On a completely semi-unrelated note, a hipster (when did that happen?) Shia LaBeouf tries to avoid getting hit by a hater.

Brit goes for another infiltration film with The East:

A story centered on contract worker who is tasked with infiltrating an anarchist group, only to find herself falling for its leader.

The East is headlined by Ellen Page, along with Alexander Skarsgård, Julia Ormond, Toby Kebbell and Patricia Clarkson.  Zal Batmanglij (please tell me you caught that this dude’s name has Batman in it), who wrote Sound of My Voice with Ms. Marling, also wrote The East with her as well.  He has directed both of these scripts as well.  Zal and Brit seem to be quite a team, their filmographies are almost parallel – and I don’t hear anyone complaining, especially not me. Zal:

I’m stoked to see where Brit ends up, and her journey along the way.  If I were to venture the film route, she’s the type of filmmaker I’d want to work with.  She is a story teller, a true artist, she’s not in it for the cash or the credit, and it shows.   Have you seen her films?? Please do.  Let me leave you with the posters (some of which I’ve posted before) from the movies Zal and Brit have done together.
